GOSPEL OF THE EGYPTIANS

Two versions of the Gospel of the Egyptians have been found in the Nag Hammadi library. Codex III Gospel
The Egyptians is in second place after the short version of the Apocrypha of John. Code V has another
a fragmentary version of the Gospel of the Egyptians, preceded by an enlarged
version of the Apocryphon of John. In their modern form, both texts go back to the same Greek
original. The text in Codex III is much better preserved, but several
pages. In the Russian translation by E. Smagina, the restoration of lost pages is given according to Code V,
the safety of which is much worse.
The Gospel of the Egyptians from the Nag Hammadi library, apparently, is not connected in any way with another text,
known by the same name, fragments of which are given by Clement of Alexandria in
"Stromatach". The alternative title of the book is The Holy Book of the Great Invisible Spirit.
The text is divided into four sections. The first - the longest section is a story about
the manifestation of the spiritual world of light by the Great Invisible Spirit, manifesting himself as the Father. This
the section ends with the word "Amen". The second part is devoted to the salvation of the heavenly Seth
his offspring, enslaved by the god of this world Saklas. The third section has two
liturgical hymns. According to a number of commentators on the text, these are baptismal hymns. Last
section - a brief story about the writing of the book and its hiding on Mount Charaxio, as well as a colophon with
information about the scribe.
Most researchers attribute the Gospel of the Egyptians to the so-called "Sethian texts"
(Pan, 39, 40). They also include the Three Steles of Seth, Allogene, Marsan, Melchizedek,
untitled text from Codex Bruce, Apocalypse of Adam, Zostrian, Gospel of Judas,
"Trinity Protennoia". The Gospel of the Egyptians also contains common plots with
Apocryphon of John and Wisdom of Jesus Christ.
