About the book "The Secret Garden" by Frances Burnett

The Secret Garden is a popular children's book by Anglo-American writer Frances Burnett. Written at the beginning of the twentieth century, this novel has not lost its relevance to this day and remains a guide to re-educating capricious children.

The main thing that distinguishes the main character of The Secret Garden from other female characters in children's literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries is her ability to evolve. The heroine here is not a cheerful mischief-maker with a big and kind heart, and not an absolutely obedient girl with a golden character. Mary Lennox is a contradictory heroine, so at first she rarely evokes sympathy or even sympathy. For the first ten years she lived with her parents in India, but when they died, she moved to Yorkshire to the house of her uncle Dr. Archibald Craven. It cannot be said that all these ten years the girl was left to her own devices: Mary was taken care of, she was given an education, she was taught good manners, but she was not loved. Therefore, the heroine Frances Burnett appears before the reader as a selfish and spoiled girl suffering from loneliness and lack of love. She does not know how to communicate with others, is constantly rude, believes that the whole world does not love her and does not love the whole world in return. In the new home, the girl continues to live the same way: her guardian provides her with everything she needs, except for sincere human feelings.

At Archibald Craven's house, Mary meets the maid Martha and her brother Dickon. It’s strange, but complete strangers quickly guess what an embittered girl needs. It is from them that Mary learns how to make friends, how to get along with people and receive love from them.

Another resident of the Misselthwaite estate is Colin, son of Archibald Craven. He, like Mary, was also an unloving father, so he suffers from the same problems: he has no friends, he grows up selfish and is convinced that the whole world revolves around him. Moreover, his father believes that Colin is sick, so the boy rarely manages to leave his room. And so Mary finds an abandoned garden on the estate. As fun, the children begin to look after him. As nature comes to life, Frances Burnett's feelings become more and more human. Moreover, it is Mary who begins to re-educate Colin, sometimes resorting to harsh but effective methods. Thus, the novel “The Secret Garden” becomes an expanded metaphor for the transformation of a child’s personality, his growing up and his discovery of a sense of kindness.

Quotes from The Secret Garden by Frances Burnett

A woman, even a commoner, can become a queen, and an aristocrat can become a servant. It all depends on how the man she loves treats her.

All egoists call all others selfish.

I have come to the conclusion that magic is what pushes, lifts and generally makes things out of nothing. Leaves and trees, flowers and birds, badgers, foxes, squirrels and even people are made of magic. This means that magic is simply everywhere - around us, and in all other places too.

When people smile, they seem much better.

Only there will the roses bloom magnificently, my boy, where you have weeded out all the weeds!

Do you believe in magic? Do you think there is a place in the modern world where you can be truly happy? No? Then you should start reading the book “The Secret Garden”.

Frances Burnett wrote the novel a long time ago, but it was first published in parts in 1910, and it was published in full in 1911 as a whole book. This work is the most popular among all the author's works.

In the foreground of The Secret Garden is a 10-year-old girl named Mary. The girl grew up in a wealthy Indian family, surrounded by the care of nannies and servants who could not stand her. The same can be said about the parents, who did not feel love for the girl, surrounding her only with money and servants. Soon her mother and father died from an epidemic, the servants went their separate ways, and no one even remembered the girl. After she was discovered, she was sent to her uncle to be raised.

Her uncle leads a reclusive life, and all because of the death of her aunt. He lives in a huge house with a beautiful garden. When the girl arrived, he didn’t even come out to meet her, but at the same time they conveyed to her the owner’s order - not to walk around the rooms in the house. Mary is very bored here, and she constantly hears the baby crying, although everyone claims that this is impossible.

The girl is given the opportunity to walk in the garden and it is in this place that she opens a secret door to the garden, where no one has entered for more than 10 years. It is here that the girl finds herself, re-educates and becomes friendly. But how will her life turn out? What secret is uncle hiding in his house? What will the girl learn about and what will she have to go through? You can find out about this if you start reading the book “The Secret Garden”.

Frances Burnett has created an interesting work that really makes you want to live. This book is very relevant in the modern world, since now it is easier for many to sit a child in front of a computer or TV, rather than walking with him on the playground. It’s easier to leave everything as it is and not raise, and for some it’s best to entrust the upbringing to other people, reducing your participation in the child’s life to a minimum. What ultimately comes out of such children? Bitter, hateful and callous people who think only about themselves.

The book "The Secret Garden" reminds readers of how a child should live in order to grow up healthy and happy. What does a baby need to be happy? According to Frances Burnett, all you need to do is provide them with fresh air and a beautiful, interesting place, and then they themselves can turn it into a paradise. In general, the work should evoke sadness, but it evokes only warmth and joy in a person’s soul.
