Decoupage translated from French means "cutting". It means a technique that involves cutting out images from leather, wood, fabric, napkins, which are subsequently pasted for decoration on dishes, furniture, textiles and any other surface. We have already offered you master classes on, now we offer you to decorate the bottle.

One of the favorite objects of decoupage masters is a bottle. Absolutely any bottle is suitable for decoration: from olive oil, alcoholic beverages, etc.

Decorating bottles with napkins is a fascinating process that requires patience and perseverance when gluing the bottle.

What do you need to decoupage a bottle?

To create a masterpiece of “napkin technique” using bottles, you will need to prepare the following materials:

  • glass bottle with a smooth surface without bulges;
  • special cards for decoupage, magazine clippings, three-layer napkins;
  • means for removing grease from glass surfaces (solvent, alcohol, acetone);
  • acrylic paints for priming and painting the surface;
  • PVA glue or decoupage glue;
  • synthetic brushes of various thicknesses;
  • acrylic lacquer;
  • additional details for decoration: rhinestones, beads, stickers;
  • craquelure varnish - to create an antique effect;
  • nail scissors;
  • masking tape;
  • a small piece of foam rubber;
  • disposable plates intended for diluting paint;
  • rags;
  • sandpaper.

Before making decoupage on a bottle, you need to prepare not only the necessary material for work, but also a work place so that you can decorate bottles with napkins for a long time and not feel tired. You need to do decoupage on a large table, on which it will be convenient to place the required tools and objects. The room should be well lit and ventilated, since when decorating a bottle using the decoupage technique, special products are used that have a pungent odor.

DIY decoupage of bottles with napkins: master class for beginners

After the necessary material has been prepared, you can proceed directly to decorating the bottle:

In order to understand how to decorate a bottle with napkins, no special skills are required. It is enough to be careful when gluing the napkin to the bottle. Such a creative craft can serve not only as decoration, but also as a holiday gift. In this case, you can decorate the bottle in accordance with the theme of the holiday, for example, on New Year, for Family Day and any other holiday.

When, after another holiday, you cannot throw away the bottle because the shape of the vessel is very interesting, it means that the feeling of beauty has overcome the arguments of reason or you already have an idea for decoration.

Your soul requires a creative act - decorating bottles with your own hands.

At your service there is always a master class in the company of a master or an online version of the work process. Design ideas can be seen on forums where needlewomen share their achievements. A simple way to decorate is decoupage with photos. After processing, a picture, photograph or postcard is pasted onto the bottle. There are many techniques and master classes where bottles are decorated with twine, salt, leather, ribbons and even tights.

Paint the bottle

In order to get a taste for decorating, simple manipulations with the object are enough. Elementary decor of glass containers is made with your own hands using paint. A transparent object can be painted inside or outside.

For interior painting, pour acrylic paint into the bottle using a syringe without a needle and rotate the bottle to achieve a dense coating on the interior.

As an interesting idea, you can paint the inside of the container in several colors. To do this, each color layer should not cover the entire surface, but only a part. The colored decor of the bottle adds mood to the interior.

The outside of the bottle is painted with a sponge or brush. Pre-treat the vessel with alcohol and apply acrylic paint using tangential movements. For white acrylic paint, purchase several toners or use gouache - mixing colored toners with a white base, get the desired shades and create colored bottle decor.

Painted bottle - the basis for decoration

You can quickly decorate an interesting-shaped bottle with your own hands using ribbons and lace. Make a small bow from ribbons, sew them onto a lace base, add a brooch, beads and place it on the neck of the vessel - an exclusive decorative item is ready!

A bright and sparkling effect is achieved using improvised materials, such as salt. Treat the outside of the prepared bottle with glue and sprinkle with salt with large crystals, carefully place on a flat surface until completely dry. Decorating an item with salt is appropriate for a winter or New Year themed interior.

If a continuous layer of salt seems boring or you need to decorate several areas with salt, then apply glue only to those places where sparkling is needed and cover with salt. A master class on this topic will help in mastering the technique.

Once again about decor

Even just by painting a bottle with your own hands, you can achieve an incredible effect of silver or gold gloss, shimmering with lights. New Year's fairy tale, covered in carnival glitter or vintage treasure.

To get a stylish effect of gold/silver plating on a future art object, it needs to be prepared. Preparing glass for subsequent decoration with your own hands, at the initial stage, is the same for any painting method: the object should be washed, dried, degreased and treated with a universal primer.

The prepared glass vessel can be painted. Car paint in a can is suitable for these purposes. It should be sprayed at a distance of 15 centimeters from the object, in the open air or on the balcony.
If you don’t have a spray can, purchase gold/silver acrylic paint from hobby stores or hardware stores. Use a foam sponge to apply. You should paint with point-to-point (tamping) movements, leaving a mark on the surface, not a stripe, the surface will be smooth, without streaks.

Gold, like silver, can be colored, i.e. has several shades, which makes working with these paints exciting.

You can complement the decor in several ways. For example, wrap the thick part of the container with lace, securing it with a glue gun. Or partially wrap it with twine, colored threads, or beads. Glue on hearts or ribbons. Decorating bottles is a fun activity, and you can use all available materials for each idea.

Decoupage of bottles with napkins (master class)

A popular technique for decorating bottles is decoupage. Attend a master class on decoupage and you will fully appreciate the technique.

Simple manipulations with napkins, decoupage cards or printed pictures allow you to get a charming decorative item of exclusive design.

The easiest way to decorate an object is to paste a cut-out picture. To get a taste of handmade attend a master class on a technique you are interested in and find ideas. Prepare the container as described above, select the scene you like (from a postcard, magazine, decoupage card), cut it out and stick it on the surface. Add accessories, brooches, beads, ribbons, gluing them with your own hands using a glue gun. Sometimes that's enough.

Decorating bottles with a more fundamental approach requires preparation; a master class will always come in handy. For the technique in the classic version, a colored layer of napkin is used. That is, a three-layer napkin requires only a layer with a pattern; the class of the napkin is also important - it must have a bright pattern.

To work you will need:

  • decoration object;
  • universal primer;
  • acrylic paint white and colored;
  • toners or artistic gouache;
  • acrylic varnish (art or construction);
  • brushes, sponge for tamponing;
  • napkin with a pattern.

Stages of the master class:

  1. Prepare the glass container (wash, degrease, prime).

  1. Paint the bottle to be decorated with white acrylic in two layers using the padding method using a sponge. Dry after each application.

  1. Using nail scissors, cut out a design from a napkin or tear it along the contour. If the drawing is on a white background, you can deviate from the outline, the white part of the napkin will merge with the background on the object.

  1. White color is not always suitable for your idea and therefore any other color can be applied to a white surface. If you are new to decoupage, use light, creamy shades to add color. With a dark background, napkins require extra work. Dry the surface.

  1. Place the drawing with the paint layer facing up and apply acrylic glue (you can use acrylic varnish) over it with a brush, try to avoid wrinkles and bubbles. You must act quickly and carefully. Dry.

  1. When you have glued all the drawings, you can begin the final design. Decoupage of bottles is completed by applying three layers of varnish and drying. Use fine sandpaper to sand the surface and apply a final layer of varnish. DIY bottle decoration is complete!

Not only decoupage

Having mastered simple decoupage of bottles with napkins, you always want more. The smooth surface of the bottle does not provide texture, which can be used to achieve a more interesting effect. You can create an interesting surface with tights or stockings. A master class on this type of decor can be found on the Internet.

To do this, cut one part from a pair of tights, soak it in a mixture of PVA glue and water (proportion 1 to 1) and put it on the bottle. Lay out coattails, waves, any texture.

Instead of tights, you can use decoupage with fabric; the procedures for materials and techniques are similar.

Leave a few spots flat to apply the napkin. Dry completely, prime with a special compound or acrylic paint. Now you can decoupage the bottles, tint them, bring your ideas to life, or leave them as is.

Another way to get texture: wrap the bottle with threads; colored threads are quite suitable for sewing of different thicknesses. Colored thread decor is also quickly obtained when using cotton yarn for knitting.

Using alternately threads of different colors you can get a very stylish decorative item; secure the threads with PVA glue. The decor of bottles with twine and threads should be varnished and used as a vase, or you can prime, paint and stick on napkins.

Leather for decoration

Decorating bottles with leather is one of the most beautiful opportunities to recycle leftover leather or outdated jackets, boot tops and get an interior item for home decoration. You can decorate any glass surface with leather. To work, you need “Moment” type glue, tweezers, scissors and a knife, as well as imagination.

To make folds, the pieces of leather need to be soft. A detailed master class can be found on the Global Network. Coat a bottle and a piece of leather with glue, apply the leather to the surface and form folds.

Working with leather is a little more difficult than decoupaging bottles with fabric, but folds are also formed directly on the glass bottle.

The formed decor should be given time to dry completely and, if desired, additionally painted, gilded, or glued on other elements - it all depends on the idea.

Coins are suitable for decorating a piggy bank; a beautifully made thick cork would not hurt for a gift wine container; it is also trimmed with leather.

Don't throw away empty ones beautiful bottles, with their help you will create a unique art object for your home with your own hands. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s decorating bottles using decoupage technique, leather finishing or dyeing, uniqueness and creativity are the most important things in decorating.

As you know, decorating objects is not a new activity and has a fairly rich and interesting history. Decoupage is rightfully considered one of the most popular decorative finishing techniques. It, in turn, includes many directions, types and styles. Some of them can be mastered quickly, while others, more complex, require special knowledge, experience and skills.

A little history

From French, the name of the decorating technique “decoupage” is translated as “cut”. The purpose of this art is to decorate objects by gluing cut-out figures from colored paper or ready-made designs on them in combination with elements made from other materials.

The decoupage technique first became popular in France back in the 17th-18th centuries. It is divided into several dozen species. Many (the most complex) of them were developed during this time. Some items could take months or years to create due to the large number of different layers required to produce them. It is known that such historical figures as Madame de Pompadour and Marie Antoinette were fond of decoupage.

Objects for decoupage

Items such as furniture, dishes, boxes, postcards, vases and much more are suitable for decoration. By showing your imagination, you can transform any thing beyond recognition and turn a completely unattractive object into a real work of art.

Most often, the decoupage technique is used to decorate bottles of drinks in honor of any holidays. It could be an anniversary, a wedding, or our beloved New Year. Decoupage of bottles is always fashionable, stylish and original.

Types of design. Decopatch

There are only 5 main types of decoupage: decopatch, direct (or classic), reverse, artistic (or smoky) and volumetric. They are all significantly different from each other, but they are still united by basic technology.

Decopatch, which is also called decoupage in the patchwork style, is characterized by the fact that individual motifs are not applied to the object being decorated, but its entire surface is completely filled with pieces of paper with a pattern. It turns out to be some kind of imitation of the patchwork quilt we all know. This decor is created using special deco patch paper. Usually it is stylized to resemble some texture of a fabric pattern or natural fur. But decopatch can also be done using more conventional means used for decoration.

The second type is classic

The direct view involves gluing pictures to any type of surface. In this case, the image must be carefully, smoothly and efficiently attached using a wet, hot or dry method, and it directly depends on the material used. This can be rice paper, decoupage cards or regular napkins.

After all the pictures are glued, they are varnished. When it is completely dry, the surface of the object is sanded until a completely smooth texture is formed. Then, if desired, the drawing can be supplemented, for example, to give it volume, toned or aged.

The third type is reverse

It is used only on transparent glass surfaces. Decoupage of bottles, vases and plates looks very beautiful. In this case, the motif is glued to the opposite side of the object, and the whole process is reversed. This is due to the fact that the surface to be processed is located in front of the front side of the design.

The fourth type is artistic

It is also called smoky. This type of decoupage imitates painting using other techniques and various effects. It provides for a harmonious combination of the pasted motif and the background into a complete picture, where no obvious transitions from one to another should be visible.

Fifth type - volumetric

Using this technique, a mixture of painting and relief is achieved. Texture irregularities are usually created through the use of fabric, structural paste or natural materials. They can be small shells, cereals or eggshells. Volumetric decoupage of bottles with fabric looks especially beautiful.

General instructions for decoupage

Despite the apparent complexity of this decoration technique, it is quite easy to master. Experience, as you know, comes in the process of work, so it’s worth trying to make the simplest bottle decoupage for beginners yourself. The classic type of decoration is perfect for this.

Necessary materials: napkins with a pattern, an empty bottle, scissors, special glue for decoupage or PVA, roller, sponge, brush, varnish and acrylic paints.

● First you need to choose the bottle you would like to decorate. You should not take too elaborate forms. Because the simpler they are, the easier it will be to design the bottle in decoupage style.

● Take a napkin you like and carefully cut out the design shown on it. Since it consists of several layers, it is necessary to separate the topmost one. Don't worry that the drawing will tear - the paper is quite durable. It is with this motive that we will continue to work.

● If you don’t have decoupage glue, you can use PVA, but before doing this you need to dilute it slightly with water. Then we spread the motif and carefully glue it to the surface of the bottle. The pattern must be carefully smoothed, starting from the center and gradually approaching the edges. Since our napkin is a little wet, it can be easily damaged. The glued image is smoothed with a roller, and excess glue is removed with a sponge.

● At this point, decoupage of bottles with napkins can be considered almost complete. But if you wish, tint them with acrylic paints, draw some patterns or stick on beads and shells. In this case, you can do whatever comes to your mind.

● When the bottle is dry, it is covered with a special decoupage varnish. Some, in the absence of such, use colorless nail polish. After this, the product should be taken out to the balcony, where it will finally dry and weather. That's it, your first decoupage item is ready!

Partial decoration with fabric

In order to make such decoupage of bottles with your own hands, you will have to visit not only a store with stationery supplies, but also look where they sell goods for artists. One way or another, all materials are quite accessible. In addition to fabric and a bottle, you will need PVA glue, putty, alcohol, a drawing, which will then be transferred to the fabric, as well as acrylic varnish, primer and paints. It will be great if gold and silver come across in a set of colors.

Decoupage of bottles always begins with cleaning their surface. It is necessary to thoroughly wash and remove any paper stickers on them. To do this, you just need to soak them in warm water for a while. The bottle is then wiped with alcohol to remove all fat. This procedure is mandatory. After this, the entire surface is coated with acrylic varnish. I must say that it dries quite quickly.

The next stage of decoupage will be the proper preparation of the fabric. To do this, pour glue into a bowl and dilute it with water 1:1. For better contact with the glass surface, a little putty is usually added to it. If the fabric is white, then paint of the desired color is also added there.

Now the matter is lowered into the impregnation solution, and then squeezed out. The shape of the flap is arbitrary, and the size must be large enough to wrap half the bottle. The fabric should be laid in beautiful, elegant folds and left to dry for about a day. After this, you can apply other decorative decorations: beads, sparkles or foam balls. When all the elements are ready, the bottle is opened with varnish.

Full fabric decoration

In order to create decoupage of bottles that are entirely decorated with fabric, you can take scraps of any size. It is better if it is satin, silk or chintz. Before use, they must be washed and dried well.

We make a solution of PVA glue and water and lower pieces of fabric there. Then we take out one at a time and attach it to the surface of the bottle with beautiful folds. You can cut out one oval or round piece from which to make a medallion. It must be glued evenly, without a single crease.

Next, when the fabric on the bottle has dried, the medallion is decorated with some kind of pattern, for example, a napkin pattern. In this case, only the reverse part of the motive is smeared with glue and strictly along the contour. After it dries, the excess paper is cut off. When finishing the decoupage of bottles with your own hands, the fabric is decorated with various small elements or more voluminous details, such as large beads, flowers made from ribbons or beaded ornaments. If you wish, you can paint your product with watercolor, gouache or acrylic paints. To complete the process, the bottle is varnished and dried.

Master class: decoupage with napkins

Beginners in this business should not take on any overly complex decoration. It is worth trying the simplest classic type of technique, supplemented, if desired, with small volumetric details. Consider decoupage of bottles with napkins. Master class with step by step description actions will help in your work.

● Step 1. Choose a napkin with a black and white design you like and tear it off or cut it out. Then carefully separate the topmost layer. We will use it to decorate our product.

● Step 2. Wash the bottle well, remove labels, if any, and degrease the surface with alcohol. Then evenly coat with white acrylic paint.

● Step 3. Glue the cut out napkin motif. To do this, we use PVA glue diluted in half with water.

● Step 4. At the top above the image, carefully paint with a thin brush with white acrylic so as to capture the edges of the napkin.

●Step 5. Now below the drawing we do the same, but only with black paint, and tint it to the very bottom. After the bottle has dried, we open its entire surface 2 times with acrylic varnish.

● Step 6. Thus, we have a very nice and original bottle. You can decorate your creation according to your taste and desire, for example, by gluing white and black beads, bows, etc.

Decoupage wedding bottles

Now in specialized salons and stores you can find any paraphernalia for various special events. Sometimes their diversity is simply amazing! There you can buy very beautiful large flower arches and small boutonnieres, fancy-shaped glasses and decorated bottles, which are displayed on the table for the bride and groom. And it should be noted that all this is not cheap. But why spend a lot of money if you can decoupage bottles with your own hands? In addition, in this case the products will be exclusive.

It’s okay if this is your first time encountering this design technique. Of course, mastering it requires time and special napkins, which are not sold in every store. But there is a simpler option that will allow even a beginner who is not associated with the art of artistic decoration to make original decoupage of wedding bottles.

Simple design

First of all, for simplified decoration using conventional greeting card You will need a bottle of champagne, the color of which does not matter, white acrylic paint and varnish, and a brush. In addition, you will have to visit a hardware store and purchase silver or gold paint there. You need to choose a card with a wedding theme. It is advisable that the drawing be on a white or other, but always light, background, since it will be much easier to disguise than a dark one.

At the first stage, decoupage of a champagne bottle begins with removing all labels and traces of glue using warm water and a sponge. Then the surface is degreased with acetone or alcohol and covered with white acrylic paint, but the layer may turn out uneven. There is nothing to worry about here, since after all the work is completed this minor defect will be absolutely unnoticeable. The easiest way to apply paint is with a sponge.

The next stage is preparing the postcard. First, it is coated with varnish in 2 layers and left to dry. Don't be afraid that the edges will curl, this is a normal process. Now very carefully you need to separate the top thin layer with the pattern from the cardboard base. You will get an improvised decoupage napkin. Then the pattern is cut out along the contour. You can leave it whole, but it is best to separate it into separate fragments, for example, images of newlyweds, flowers and doves with rings.

We glue the pictures to the bottle with PVA glue, while we smear not the back of the image, but the product itself, and smooth them out. We dilute light pink and pale blue acrylic paints and, to hide the edges of the card, carefully draw along their edges with a wide brush, carefully shading the borders. We continue decoupaging the champagne bottle by applying silver or gold veins to it, which will hide all small defects and irregularities.

And finally, the final stage is protruding decor, which can be used as silver or golden bows and artificial pearls of different sizes. They will help to give your creation a finished look. This completes the decoupage of the bottle for the wedding.

As you can see for yourself, decorating objects with your own hands is quite an exciting activity. Decoupage is not such a complicated decoration technique. And besides, it does not require too much expense, because it is not for nothing that it arose, as they believe, in the circles of low-income segments of the population. But, despite this, thanks to the imagination of talented people, decoupage was able to turn into real art!

Decoupage is a technique that has no frames or boundaries, allowing you to realize the maximum creative ideas and create truly unique decor items with your own hands. Decoupage can be done different ways using paper, textiles, leather, wood, plants, food, etc. on glass containers of any size and shape. The most affordable and effective way to decorate a glass bottle is with napkins. Read the article on how to simply and attractively decorate a bottle using decoupage technique.

Decoupage with napkins and acrylic is the simplest and most effective way of decoration, the technique of which will be clear and simple even for beginners. In order to decorate the bottle, we will need a decorative primer, napkins with an interesting pattern, silver or gold acrylic paint, scissors, PVA glue, a household sponge, and fixing varnish.

In order to get a beautiful and original product, you need:

  1. Prepare the bottle for decoration: remove the labels, wash and degrease the surface (with alcohol, acetone).
  2. Cover the bottle with decorative primer and let the layer dry.
  3. Cut out the outline of the images from the napkin and glue them to the bottle. Applications must be applied dry, covering the design with glue from the center to the periphery.
  4. Using a sponge, apply acrylic paint using a blotting motion. Wait for the product to dry completely.
  5. Open the bottle with varnish to fix the image.

This decoupage is perfect for both glass and plastic bottles. Design in this way can be done in any style and theme. The main thing is to choose the appropriate napkins and paint color.

How to decoupage a bottle with a napkin and craquelure

Craquelure is a unique material that can give the surface an aged look. In tandem with floral prints, craquelure decor will allow you to make a unique and incredibly attractive product with your own hands. In order to decorate the bottle, in addition to craquelure and a napkin with a pattern, we will need pastel crayons to match the images on the napkin, light and dark acrylic paints, brushes, a foam sponge, and aqualac.

In order to decorate a bottle, you need:

  1. Apply dark acrylic paint to a clean, grease-free surface with a foam sponge and wait for it to dry completely.
  2. Cover the bottle with craquelure varnish.
  3. After the craquelure has dried, apply light acrylic paint. The layer must be applied quickly using a sponge. You should paint one place only once, otherwise you can paint over the craquelure cracks that appear.
  4. Open the product with a scuba cap and wait until it dries.
  5. Paste images cut from a napkin in the standard way, which is described in the first master class, in accordance with the author's idea.
  6. Use pastel crayons to hide the boundaries between the background of the bottle and the appliqué. You need to apply the pastel with your finger, as if stretching the color from the drawing to the background, making a smooth shading. The color of the chalk must match the color of the element's border.
  7. Cover the finished product with aqualac in order to maximally level the surface height of the bottle with the image and secure the result.

For the finishing coat of craquelure and decoupage, it is better to choose a matte aqualac so that the product does not have a glossy sheen, which is unusual for antique items. Craquelure decor is accessible and understandable even for novice designers. In this way you can decorate small bottles, “pot-bellied” glass jugs, bottles of non-standard shapes, etc.

DIY decoupage of bottles with napkins using rice paper

Decoupage with rice napkins is the most convenient method of decoration, in which the boundaries between the pattern and the surface of the bottle are almost invisible, and therefore this type of design does not require a lot of time spent working with the background and masking the appliqués. Products made using rice napkins look cleaner and more natural due to the low density of the paper. But working with rice paper requires a certain skill, because images from a napkin should not be cut out “on the edge,” but torn out by hand. Often, this is accompanied by a tear in the picture.

In order to make an attractive bottle, we will need: several rice paper napkins, acrylic paint for the background, decoupage glue or PVA, brushes, foam sponge, finishing coat.

It is better to choose a background color in a pastel range: such shades will allow the napkin to blend most successfully with the bottle, and the designs against such a background will look brighter and more saturated.

The bottle should be decorated step by step:

  1. A background should be applied to a previously washed and degreased surface using a foam sponge.
  2. Glue the appliqués. Images can be glued in the usual way (a dry cloth on a dry surface using PVA with water 1:1) or in a “wet” way, which allows you to fix the image as evenly as possible, without bends or air bubbles. To implement this method, the application must be placed on the file facing inward and the napkin held under water for several seconds. After that, place a napkin on the bottle, remove the file and apply glue over the image.
  3. Open the decoupage with varnish.

When choosing rice paper napkins for decoupage bottles, preference should be given to products with the lowest density (5-14 g/sq.m.).

Egg decoupage of bottles with napkins step by step: photo

Decoupage of glass containers can also be done with improvised materials that are easy to find in everyday life, for example, eggshells. This version of decoupage allows you to make a unique product with voluminous, convex details that imitate a mosaic. To decorate a bottle using this technique, we will need primer, pieces of eggshell (approximate size - 15x15 mm), napkins with large prints (roses, butterflies, etc.), acrylic paints, pearlescent pigment, brushes, foam sponge, decoupage glue or PVA, aqualac.

To decorate the bottle you need:

  1. Apply primer to the prepared glass surface.
  2. Dry glue the cut out pictures.
  3. Cover the surface between the images with glue and attach pieces of shell to it, pressing them lightly. The shell pieces should be placed at a distance of one to two millimeters from each other: this way the mosaic will look more natural and organic.
  4. Leave the product for 6-8 hours to dry completely.
  5. Mix white acrylic paint with color to get a pastel shade to match the appliqués on the bottle.
  6. Without going to the drawings, cover the product with the resulting paint using a foam sponge.
  7. Apply Aqualac and let the bottle dry.
  8. Take the pigment on your finger and rub it into the shell and the space around the images.
  9. Secure the result with scuba diving.

Decoupage bottles photo

During the period of the formation of the decoupage hobby in Russia, one of the first objects that literally all masters began to decorate were bottles of wine and champagne. Particular attention was paid to bottles with a non-standard shape and voluminous texture. They were not thrown away, but turned into real interior decor.

Various materials and techniques are used to decoupage bottles - napkins, putty, decorative elements, or in general, whatever is at hand.

What you need for decoupage, a list for beginners

As mentioned above, there are many techniques for performing decoupage, and they are actively developing - new materials, techniques and directions are appearing.

But still, there are main directions that we will give:
Classic decoupage - gluing napkins, decoupage cards, rice paper onto a flat hard surface;

Artistic decoupage - differs from the classic one in that artistic techniques, additional drawings, underpaintings, aging and more are added to the main image;

Reverse decoupage - gluing a picture onto the back surface of a transparent base;

Volumetric decoupage - when decorating, various volumetric pastes, putty and decorative elements are used.

In order to work in certain techniques, a set of materials is required - different in each specific case, but there is a necessary set that any beginning craftswoman should have:

Napkins, rice paper, decoupage card— necessary components for almost any technique, the basis of any composition. You can now buy these materials at any craft store, office supply store, or online. You can use ordinary table napkins if you find interesting ones with good image quality and a suitable subject.

Sandpaper– should always be in your arsenal for polishing surfaces; as a rule, there should be several types of grain – medium and fine, since there are several stages of polishing.

Alcohol or any alcohol-containing liquid to degrease the surface; you can also use nail polish remover.

Primer– a special acrylic material, applied as a base for decoupage for good adhesion to the surface.

Acrylic paints– in decoupage, mainly only acrylic materials are used, this is due to the fact that they dry quickly and are easy to apply. It is better to have a range of colors in your arsenal, as they are often used for painting.

Glue for decoupage- as a rule, it is acrylic, but ordinary PVA household glue is widely used.

Acrylic lacquer– There are many varieties of acrylic varnish – matte, glossy and chameleon. Many needlewomen use ordinary construction acrylic varnish High Quality, but for beginning craftswomen it is recommended to use professional decoupage varnish.

Brushes– synthetic brushes, mostly flat, are most widely used in decoupage. The sizes may be different, as they are used for different purposes.

Stationery file– in some cases used for gluing napkins.
Scissors- used when cutting out images; many craftswomen use manicures.
Roller– a small construction roller is quite suitable; it is used to smooth out the pasted image.

Stack- This is an artistic tool, very well suited for mixing paints.

What varnish is needed for decoupage

One of the most important materials is decoupage varnish; the overall result often depends on it. As a rule, varnish is applied at the very end to fix the image. The quality and composition of the varnish also affects the final appearance.

Varnishes are divided into several types according to composition and purpose (decorative and finishing).
Acrylic lacquer- the most popular, it is non-toxic, odorless and non-flammable, as it is water-based. Thanks to its composition, it dries quickly and does not turn yellow over time.
Acrylic lacquer used not only as a finish, but also as an intermediate - to fix the next layer. The intermediate varnish is then used as a basis for further decoration.
Due to its wide compositional possibilities, there is a line of varnishes with decorative effects.
In order to be fully equipped, take care of the availability of several types of varnish in your workshop - ordinary acrylic (matte and glossy) and finish.

What glue is needed for decoupage

For decoupage, acrylic glue is mainly used. Art stores sell special glue for decoupage, it is sold in small jars and is quite expensive.

Most brands specializing in the production of goods for applied arts have glue in their lines. In addition, most professional craftswomen actively use PVA construction adhesive of various brands.

If you are a beginner craftsman, it is better to use professional glue, but if you do not have the opportunity to purchase glue in an art store, we will tell you about the most important characteristics of the glue necessary for it to be used in decoupage works:

  • Colorless when dry;
  • Medium consistency;
  • Should not dry out quickly;
  • Should not turn yellow over time;
  • Should not have a smell.

Decoupage of bottles with napkins step by step, master class

If you want to diversify your interior, we suggest decorating an ordinary glass bottle. It can be used as a decorative piece of furniture, or as a vase.

To decorate a bottle with napkins you will need:

  • Glass bottle.
  • A decoupage napkin or card, rice paper will also work, the design can be anything.
  • Alcohol, vodka or solvent to degrease the surface.
  • Acrylic paint.
  • Decoupage glue or PVA glue.
  • Acrylic varnish.
  • Brushes, sponges (you can use a dish sponge), scissors.

First you need to prepare the bottle - remove labels and degrease the surface.

Before gluing the napkin, we will make the background with acrylic paint. Use the background color at your discretion, as long as it matches the pattern on the napkin. Dilute the background paint with water so that it turns out translucent like a haze. For relief, make several layers. Leave the space for the drawing unpainted.

You need to cut out a design from a napkin, but you can simply tear it out with your hands. Separate the bottom two layers of napkin.

We apply a napkin to the surface remaining under the drawing and coat it with a layer of glue on top. Try to get rid of any bubbles and carefully straighten out the folds. Let the glue dry. Try to work carefully as the napkin is very thin and can easily tear.

Now you need to fix the drawing; to do this, you need to cover the bottle with a thin layer of acrylic varnish.

After the first layer of varnish has dried, you can give the bottle an aged look. To do this, dilute black or other dark paint with water and use an old toothbrush to spray it on. It is better to practice on an unnecessary surface first. It is necessary to take into account that when sprayed, the paint can scatter in all directions, so it is better to do this over a basin or bucket so as not to stain everything around.

After the paint has dried, apply two more layers of varnish.

As a result, we got a full-fledged piece of furniture from an unnecessary bottle.

DIY decoupage of bottles with tights step by step with photos

Volumetric decoupage- one of the most popular techniques; to implement it, various auxiliary materials are used to create volume. Texture is achieved through decorative painting with contrasting colors.

We offer a master class in which ordinary women's tights are used as the material for creating volume.

Materials used:

  • Glass bottle with screw cap.
  • PVA glue.
  • Nylon tights.
  • Hot glue gun.
  • Peas.

Cut off the stocking part of the tights.

Fill a deep container with glue and soak.

Place on the bottle and form a drape, leave to dry.

For the hat, use a metal cap. Place a small piece of stocking soaked in glue onto the lid. Connect the ends and screw them onto the top of the lid. Bend the edges of the lid to create a hat shape and leave to dry.

Cut strips from the stocking part of the tights.

Gather each strip onto a thread.

Form roses.

Soak the roses in glue and also send them to dry.

Glue the dried roses onto the dress and onto the bottle.

Glue a bottle cap to the bottom of the hat.

Glue decorative elements in the form of beads and earrings.

Paint the finished composition with spray paint, first brown and then gold, while using gold paint to paint only the protruding parts.

Another available material for decorating a bottle using the decoupage technique is toilet paper. With its help you can create any volumetric elements.

You will need:

  • Glass bottle.
  • Degreasing liquid – alcohol, solvent, etc.
  • Any PVA glue.
  • Foam sponge.
  • Stationery clip.
  • Synthetic brush.
  • Sponge with large pores.
  • Toilet paper.

  • Acrylic paints.
  • Acrylic varnish.

Clear the bottle of labels and degrease with an alcohol-containing compound or a napkin.

Prime the surface with white paint or a special primer; do not paint the neck yet. Let it dry.

Place the napkin on the bottle and cover it with glue; using a brush, try to carefully smooth out all the wrinkles from the center to the edges.

Coat the rest of the bottle generously with glue.

Place pieces of toilet paper textured onto the glue-coated surface. Leave the bottle to dry.

After the paper has dried well, coat the entire surface of the bottle with varnish.

Paint the bottle a color that matches the color of the napkin.

Complete the picture where necessary.

Dip a dry sponge into the paint, beat it thoroughly and go over the raised areas - this will add additional volume.

Decoupage of bottles with eggshells master class

Decoupage with eggshells has a similar end result to the craquelure effect - aging by simulating cracks in the paint. The difference is that the surface becomes more prominent.

The advantage is that the material used is not expensive art material, but ordinary eggshells.
Another plus is that with the help of shells we can hide various minor imperfections of the decorated surface, for example, chips.

Many may have a question - what to do first: stick on the shell or stick on the napkin. In principle, there is not much difference, act according to the situation. The main thing is that if you have already glued the napkin, before you start gluing the shell, cover the design with varnish, since when you are gluing, there is a high probability that glue will get on the napkin - this will make it wet.

Start by covering a small area of the surface with glue and, as shown in the figure, stick on pieces of the shell. Work in small areas.

Below we offer step-by-step detailed photographs.

Decorating with eggshells really helps to hide various inscriptions and that’s why I often use them to decorate bottles. If you already have an idea of how the bottle or object will be decorated, you can start by gluing the shell; if not, first do decoupage, then stick the shell.

After covering the entire surface as planned, leave the bottle to dry. This may take quite a long time, but be patient.

Cut out additional decorative elements and stick on too.

Cover the lace with acrylic paint.

With an acrylic contour, you need to apply points at the base and on the neck of the bottle.

Paint the top of the bottle in a suitable color.

You can use white paint to tone down the color a little if it is too bright.

Separate the top layer of the napkin with the pattern, tear out the picture with your hands along the edges of the image.

Glue the picture onto the bottle using a brush and glue, apply the glue on top of the picture.

On the back side also stick a picture, maybe the same one.
